Part II  Reading Comprehension (25%)
Directions: Read the following passages and answer the questions which accompany them by choosing A, B, C, or D. Mark your choice on the Answer Sheet.
Passage One
If you intend using humor in your talk to make people smile, you must know how to identify shared experiences and problems. Your humor must be relevant to the audience and should help to show them that you are one of them or that you understand their situation and are in sympathy with their point of view. Depending on whom you are addressing, the problems will be different. If you are talking to a group of managers, you may refer to the disorganized methods of their secretaries; alternatively if you are addressing secretaries, you may want to comment on their disorganized bosses.
Here is an example, which I heard at a nurses’ convention, of a story which works well because the audience all shared the same view of doctors. A man arrives in heaven and is being shown around by St. Peter. He sees wonderful accommodations, beautiful gardens, sunny weather, and so on. Everyone is very peaceful, polite and friendly until, waiting in a line for lunch, the new arrival is suddenly pushed aside by a man in a white coat, who rushes to the head of the line, grabs his food and stamps over to a table by himself. “Who is that?” the new arrival asked St. Peter. “Oh, that’s God,” came the reply, “but sometimes he thinks he’s a doctor.”
If you are part of the group which you are addressing, you will be in a position to know the experiences and problems which are common to all of you and it’ll be appropriate for you to make a passing remark about the inedible canteen food or the chairman’s notorious bad taste in ties. With other audiences you mustn’t attempt to cut in with humor as they will resent an outsider making disparaging remarks about their canteen or their chairman. You will be on safer ground if you stick to scapegoats like the Post Office or the telephone system.
If you feel awkward being humorous, you must practice so that it becomes more natural. Include a few casual and apparently off-the-cuff remarks which you can deliver in a relaxed and unforced manner. Often it’s the delivery which causes the audience to smile, so speak slowly and remember that a raised eyebrow or an unbelieving look may help to show that you are making a light-hearted remark.
Look for the humor. It often comes from the unexpected twist on a familiar quote “If at first you don’t succeed, give up” or a play on words or on a situation. Search for exaggerations and understatements. Look at your talk and pick out a few words or sentences which you can turn about and inject with humor.

Passage Two
My new home was a long way from the centre of London but it was becoming essential to find a job, so finally I spent a whole morning getting to town and putting my name down to be considered by London Transport for a job on the tube. They were looking for guards, not drivers. This suited me. I couldn’t drive a car but thought that I could probably guard a train, and perhaps continue to write my poems between stations. The writers Keats and Chekhov had been doctors. T.S. Eliot had worked in a bank and Wallace Stevens for an insurance company. I would be a tube guard. I could see myself being cheerful, useful, a good man in a crisis. Obviously I would be overqualified but I was willing to forget about that in return for a steady income and travel privileges—those being particularly welcome to someone living a long way from the city centre.
The next day I sat down, with almost a hundred other candidates, for the intelligence test. I must have done all right because after half an hour’s wait I was sent into another room for a psychological test. This time there were only about fifty candidates. The examiner sat at a desk. You were signaled forward to occupy the seat opposite him when the previous occupant had been dismissed, after a greater or shorter time. Obviously the long interviews were the more successful ones. Some of the interviews were as short as five minutes. Mine was the only one that lasted a minute and a half.
I can remember the question now: “Why did you leave your last job? ... Why did you leave your job before that? ... And the one before that?” I can’t recall my answers, except that they were short at first and grew progressively shorter. His closing statement, I thought, revealed a lack of sensitivity which helped to explain why as a psychologist, he had risen no higher than the underground railway. “You have failed the psychological test and we are unable to offer you a position.”
Failing to get that job was my low point. Or so I thought, believing that the work was easy. Actually, such jobs—being a postman is another one I still desire—demand exactly the sort of elementary yet responsible awareness that the habitual dreamer is least qualified to give. But I was still far short of full self-understanding. I was also short of cash.
46. The writer applied for the job because ______.
A. he could no longer afford to live without one
B. he wanted to work in the center of London
C. he had received suitable training
D. he was not interested in any other available job

47. The writer thought he was overqualified for the job because ______.
A. he had written many poems
B. he often travelled underground
C. he had worked in an insurance company
D. he could deal with difficult situations

48. The length of his interview meant that ______.
A. he had not done well in the intelligence test
B. he was not going to be offered the job
C. he had little work experience to talk about
D. he did not like the examiner

49. What was the writer’s opinion of the psychologist?
A. He was inefficient at his job.
B. He was unsympathetic.
C. He was unhappy with his job.
D. He was very aggressive.

50. What does the writer realize now that he did not realize then?
A. How difficult it can be to get a job.
B. How unpleasant ordinary jobs can be.
C. How badly he did in the interview.
D. How unsuitable he was for the job.

Passage Three
Americans usually consider themselves a friendly people. Their friendships, however, tend to be shorter and more casual than friendships among people from other cultures. It is not uncommon for Americans to have only one close friend during their lifetime, and consider other “friends” to be just social acquaintances. This attitude probably has something to do with American mobility and the fact that Americans do not like to be dependent on other people. They tend to “compartmentalize” friendships, having “friends at work,” “friends on the softball team,” “family friends,” etc.
Because the United States is full of movement and change, people always seem to be on the go. In this highly charged atmosphere, Americans can sometimes seem brusque or impatient. They want to know you as quickly as possible and then move on to something. Sometimes, early on, they will ask you questions that you may feel very personal. No insult is intended; their questions usually grow out of their genuine interest or curiosity, and their impatience to get to the heart of the matter. And the same goes for you. If you do not understand certain American behavior or you want to know more about them, do not hesitate to ask them questions about themselves. Americans are usually eager to explain all about their country or anything “American” in which you may be interested. So much so in fact that you may become tired of listening. It doesn’t matter because Americans tend to be uncomfortable with silence during a conversation. They would rather talk about the weather or the latest sports scores, for example, than deal with silence.
On the other hand, don’t expect Americans to be knowledgeable about international geography or world affairs, unless those subjects directly involve the United States. Because the United States is not surrounded by many other nations, some Americans tend to ignore the rest of the world.
51. The general topic of the passage is ______.
A. American culture
B. American society
C. Americans’ activities
D. Americans’ personality

52. Which of the following statements is NOT TRUE according to the passage?
A. Americans do not like to depend on other people
B. Friendships among Americans tend to be casual.
C. Americans know a lot about international affairs.
D. Americans always seem to be on the go.

53. The phrase “highly charged” (Paragraph 2) most probably means ______.
A. extremely free
B. highly responsible
C. very cheerful
D. full of mobility and change

54. It can be inferred from the passage that ______.
A. Americans want to participate in all kinds of activities
B. Americans’ character is affected by their social and geographical environment
C. Americans do not know how to deal with silence.
D. Curiosity is characteristic of Americans.

55. According to the passage, Americans tend to ignore the rest of the world because ______.
A. they are not interested in other countries
B. they are too proud of themselves
C. their country does not have many neighboring nations
D. they are too busy to learn about other countries.

Passage Four
Extinction means that something is gone forever. There are two kinds of extinction. One is low level, background extinction that occurs constantly without dramatic effect. The other is the great mass extinctions that involve a large number and variety of species. These are important because such drastic losses have a major impact on remaining life.
According to scientists, there have been five great mass extinctions, with the first occurring at the end of the Cambrian period (about 500 million years ago, or 500 mya). The next one was at the end of the Ordovician period (about 450 mya), followed by the one at the end of the Devonian period (about 345 mya). Then came the greatest mass extinction of all, at the close of the Permian period (some 225 mya). For some reason about 90 percent of marine life went extinct at that time. The most famous mass extinction occurred at the end of the Cretaceous period (65 mya) when the great dinosaurs died out along with many other species, including huge tracts of the cycad forests. But, it doesn’t end there.
Now there is disconcerting evidence that we are apparently in the midst of another, truly devastating mass extinction, and this time there is little question of the cause. If we continue on this course of environmental destruction, the extinction rate could be about 100 species per day. Within the next several decades, we could lose one-third of all species now alive. This rate of loss is unprecedented on the planet. Furthermore, the problem is qualitative, as well as quantitative. Not only are we losing more species, but we’re also losing different kinds of species. The most recent mass extinction involved only certain groups of species, such as the cycads and the dinosaurs. The other groups of species were left more or less intact. At present, though, species are dying out across the board. That is, the current extinction affects all the major categories of species. Of particular note, this time the terrestrial plants are involved. In the past, such plants were also devastated, and comeback (marked by a period of rapid expansion and speciation) by animals will be greatly slowed.
The present great extinction will also prove to discourage a revival of species for another reason. This time we are killing the systems that are particularly rich in life, including tropical forests, coral reefs, saltwater marshes, and river systems. In the past these systems have provided genetic reservoirs from which new species could spring and replenish the diversity of life on the planet. In effect, we are drying up the wellspring of future speciation.
In the past, extinctions have been due to two major processes, environmental forces (such as climatic change) and competition. For the first time, a single species (our own) has had the opportunity to cause mass extinctions at both levels. Much of the habitat destruction has been due to humans desiring the land where species lived, forcing them into extinction as they failed in their competition and now we find ourselves in the remarkable position of being able to alter environmental forces. As the Amazon basin is destroyed, the trees are no longer available to cycle water back to the atmosphere, causing many experts to predict sweeping changes in the weather.
We are continuing to interact in new ways with the environment. As we continue to release chlorofluorocarbons into the atmosphere, the ozone holes grow larger and the delicate veil of life on earth becomes increasingly bathed in destructive radiation. And we are learning that the oceans have become perilous places for many forms of life because we continue to use the great waters as dumps for dangerous or unknown chemicals.
There are those who say that our course, by now, is irreversible, that the damage is done and now we must sit back and prepare to reap what we have sown. Others, though, argue that there is still time to alter our course, to salvage much of what is left and to protect it from further damage. The danger is in accepting the first alternative if the second is really the case.
56. According to the passage, all of the following are true EXCEPT ______.
A. Great dinosaurs died out at the end of the Permian period.
B. The first extinction occurred at the end of the Cambrian period.
C. The most famous mass extinction occurred at the end of the Cretaceous period.
D. The third extinction occurred at the end of the Devonian period.

57. Which is the main reason that discourages the revival of species?
A. We are killing all the major categories of species, including terrestrial plants.
B. We killed certain groups of species, such as the cycads and the dinosaurs.
C. We are killing coral reefs, saltwater marshes, and river systems.
D. We are losing more species.

58. The expression highlighted in paragraph 4 “we are drying up the wellspring of future speciation” could best be replaced by ______.
A. we are losing more animals and plants
B. we are drying up waters for ocean life
C. we are losing sources of future speciation
D. we are drying up resources that plants could use to launch their comeback

59. Which of the following can be inferred from the highlighted part ‘a single species (our own) has had the opportunity to cause mass extinctions at both levels’ in paragraph 5?
A. Humans force other species to become extinct by causing sweeping changes in weather.
B. Humans alter environmental forces and force other species into extinction as they fail to compete with us.
C. Other species have little chance to survive because of humans influence on environment.
D. Humans have the potential to cause mass extinction at the competition level.

60. It is implied in the passage that ______.
A. it is dangerous to assume that the damage is irreversible if it is reversible
B. it is possible to save what is left and protect it from further damage
C. it is good for human beings if the damage is reversible
D. it is dangerous to assume that the damage is reversible if it is irreversible.

Passage Five
When one animal attacks another, it engages in the most obvious example of aggressive behavior. Psychologists have adopted several approaches to understanding aggressive behavior in people.
The Biological Approach. Numerous biological structures and chemicals appear to be involved in aggression. One is the hypothalamus, a region of the brain. In response to this inborn reaction pattern: electrical stimulation of part of the hypothalamus triggers aggressive behaviors in many animals. In people, however, whose brains are more complex, other brain structures apparently moderate possible instincts.
An offshoot of the biological approach called sociobiology suggests that aggression is natural and even desirable for people. Sociobiology views much social behavior, including aggressive behavior, as genetically determined. Consider Darwin’s theory of evolution. Darwin held that many more individuals are produced than can find food and survive into adulthood. A struggle for survival follows. Those individuals who possess characteristics that provide them with an advantage in the struggle for existence are more likely to survive and contribute their genes to the next generation. In many species, such characteristics include aggressiveness. Because aggressive individuals are more likely to survive and reproduce, whatever genes are linked to aggressive behavior are more likely to be transmitted to subsequent generations.
The socio-biological view has been attacked on numerous grounds. One is that people’s capacity to outwit other species, not their aggressiveness, appears to be the dominant factor in human survival. Another is that there is too much variation among people to believe that they are dominated by, or at the mercy of, aggressive impulses.
The Psychodynamic Approach. Theorists adopting the psychodynamic approach hold that inner conflicts are crucial for understanding human behavior, including aggression. Sigmund Freud, for example, believed that aggressive impulses are inevitable reactions to the frustrations of daily life.
Children normally desire to vent aggressive impulses on other people, including their parents, because even the most attentive parent cannot gratify all of their demands immediately. Yet children, also fearing their parents’ punishment and the loss of parental love, come to repress most aggressive impulses. The Freudian perspective, in a sense, sees us as steam engines. By holding in rather than venting “steam,” we set the stage for future explosions. Pent-up aggressive impulses demand outlets. They may be expressed toward parents in indirect ways, such as destroying furniture, or they may be expressed toward strangers later in life.
According to psychodynamic theory, the best ways to prevent harmful aggression may be to encourage less harmful aggression. In the steam-engine analogy, verbal aggression may vent some of the aggressive steam. Some psychologists who favor the cathartic approach refer to the venting of aggressive impulses as “catharsis.” Catharsis is theorized to be a safety valve. But research findings on the usefulness of catharsis are mixed. Some studies suggest that catharsis leads to reductions in tension and a lowered likelihood of future aggression. Other studies, however, suggest that letting some steam escape actually encourages more aggression later on.
The Cognitive Approach. Cognitive psychologists assert that our behavior is influenced by our values, by the ways in which we interpret our situations, and by choice. For example, people who believe that aggression is necessary and justified—as during wartime—are likely to act aggressively, whereas people who believe that a particular war or act of aggression is unjust, or who think that aggression is never justified, are less likely to behave aggressively.
One cognitive theory suggests that aggravating and painful events trigger unpleasant feelings. These feelings, in turn, can lead to aggressive action, but not automatically. Cognitive factors intervene. People decide whether they will act aggressively or not on the basis of factors such as their experiences with aggression and their interpretation of other people’s motives. Supporting evidence comes from research showing that aggressive people often distort other people’s motives. For example, they assume that other people mean them harm when they do not.
61. According to paragraph 2, what evidence indicates that aggression in animals is related to the hypothalamus?
A. Some aggressive animal species have a highly developed hypothalamus.
B. Electrical stimulation of the hypothalamus produces aggression in animals.
C. Animals behaving aggressively show increased activity in the hypothalamus.
D. Animals who lack a hypothalamus display few aggressive tendencies.

62. According to Darwin’s theory of evolution, members of a species are forced to struggle for survival because ______.

B. individuals try to defend their young against attackers
C. many more individuals are born than can survive until the age of reproduction
D. individuals with certain genes are more likely to reach adulthood

A. deliberately build up their aggression to make themselves stronger
B. usually release aggression in explosive ways
C. must vent their aggression to prevent it from building up
D. typically lose their aggression if they do not express it

Americans invite their friends to their homes more than most people in Europe. Parties for children and for grown-ups are constantly occupying the leisure hours, usually with something to drink. In their suburbs Americans are extremely friendly and hospitable. They are also very interested in each other, and when a new family moves into a suburban house the neighbors will be calling at once to see if they can help in any way. The problem of personal social barriers has been overcome very much more successfully than in any part of Europe. The new suburb recreates the sense of community of the old country village. In it, a family’s home is not an isolated island, but a part of a group of homes. Moreover, most find their homes more satisfying because they still have plenty of contacts outside the rural neighborhood. Most go to work in another place, so that the suburban home is only a part of their environment.

Section A  Summary Writing
Directions: Read the following passage carefully and then write a summary. The summary you make should demonstrate your verbal skills in organizing the original information and keep the word limit to about one third of the original length.
If women are mercilessly exploited year after year, they have only themselves to blame. Because they tremble at the thought of being seen in public in clothes that are out of fashion, they are always taken advantage of by the designers and the big stores. Clothes which have been worn only a few times have to be put aside because of the change of fashion. When you come to think of it, only a woman is capable of standing in front of a wardrobe packed full of clothes and announcing sadly that she has nothing to wear.
Changing fashions are nothing more than the intentional creation of waste. Many women spend vast sums of money each year to replace clothes that have hardly been worn. Women who cannot afford to throw away clothing in this way, waste hours of their time altering the dresses they have. Skirts are lengthened or shortened; neck lines are lowered or raised, and so on.
No one can claim that the fashion industry contributes anything really important to society. Fashion designers are rarely concerned with vital things like warmth, comfort and durability. They are only interested in outward appearance and they take advantage of the fact that women will put up with any amount of discomfort, as long as they look right. There can hardly be a man who hasn’t at some time in his life smiled at the sight of a woman shaking in a thin dress on a winter day, or delicately picking her way through deep snow in high-heeled shoes.
When comparing men and women in the matter of fashion, the conclusions to be drawn are obvious. Do the constantly changing fashions of women’s clothes, one wonders, reflect basic qualities of inconstancy and instability? Men are too clever to let themselves be cheated by fashion designers. Do their unchanging styles of dress reflect basic qualities of stability and reliability? That is for you to decide.

Part IV  Translation 参考译文
Section A(汉译英)参考译文:
The biggest challenge for college education in recent decades is how to meet different needs from students. Students today are quite different from each other in their interests, backgrounds, incentives and academic preparations. And all that is because of popularization of college education and rise of proportion of entering higher grades.
Then what are the strategies from higher education of different countries? Revolution of higher education in many ways deserves commendations. Higher education system in many countries is becoming more and more flexible in teaching requirements today than what it was decades ago. The teaching content has been renewed according to students’ hobbies. Studying is no longer entirely dependent on teaching in class. However, students have opportunities to apply what they learnt in order to make up for the shortcomings of teaching in class. Knowledge and skills become more responsible to needs of market and students themselves.
Part V  Writing 参考范文
Section A  Summary Writing 参考范文:
The passage talks about women being exploited in our society. Women have been so afraid of being out of fashion that the designers and the big stores could exploit them. With fashion changed, women would put the worn clothes aside, even the clothes that have hardly been worn. The passage points out that fashion is just the waste. Actually, the fashion industry does something important to our society. But the designers only pay attention to the fact that women just want fashion, regardless of comfort. As to men, they won’t be treated by fashion.

Tell the Truth
Telling the truth is lauded as a virtue by most, if not all, of the world’s cultures and religions. Many of us, if asked to enumerate the qualities we seek in a relationship, in my opinion, would place telling the truth at the top of the list.
One negative repercussion of not telling the truth is that it can become a huge drain on one’s time and energy. Significant effort is required to fabricate falsehoods. People who engage in deceptive or fraudulent activities go to great lengths to ensure that others perceive them as honest and trustworthy. In the majority of cases, the first lie someone tells is not the last. Apart from depleting our time and energy, not telling the truth can also have serious repercussions on our mental health. Dishonest people, even if they have not yet been “found out,” are likely to carry guilt and shame inside them.
Considering the adverse repercussion that lying can have, it is apparent that telling the truth is our better option.
