One in every five young people in this country shows signs and symptoms of a mental health
problem, but too often we don’t recognize the warning signs. According to the U.S. Surgery General half
of these young people will also develop a problem with drugs. Do you know what signs to look for in
your children and how to help?
Left untreated, mental health and addiction disorders can result in poor performance in school,
behavior problems, relationship problems, or even suicide. More teenagers and young adults die from
suicide than from cancer, heart disease, AIDS, birth defects, stroke, pneumonia, influenza, and chronic
lung disease combined. Experts say that unfortunately, most of these young people don’t get the
professional help they need before it’s too late.
