I. Reading Comprehension (30%; one point each)
Directions: Read the following six passages. Answer the questions below each passage by choosing A, B, C, or D. Write your answers on the Answer Sheet.
Passage 1
Some of today’s most cutting-edge technology is now being used to help students with special needs. No longer just the province of games for “video needs”, virtual reality has come into its own as a tool for special education teachers and therapists. As such, it is used for assessment, teaching, and practice, according to Skip Rizzo, research assistant professor at the University of Southern California.
For example, virtual reality has been used effectively to assess students’ depth perception, with the results being quite different from those obtained from traditional paper and pencil tests. It is also used to help students gain transition skills: Students with autism or developmental delay can visit a virtual supermarket, take public transportation, cross the street, or organize his or her day. Students in wheelchairs can learn how to navigate buildings. And the beauty is that these students can make any number of mistakes without endangering themselves.
In fact, one of the biggest virtues of virtual reality is that it allows students to learn in a safe environment, and this holds true for students with behavior disorders. After a student has learned an appropriate behavior or way of controlling his or her anger, the student is put in progressively more difficult virtual social situations where he or she can practice the new technique. And it is expected that future teachers will be exposed to virtual classes, complete with “difficult students” to help them master behavior management techniques.
Virtual reality even allows us to tailor the world to meet a child’s needs. Let’s say we’re teaching a child to cross the street by paying attention to traffic signs. Educators have found that it is often difficult for the child to locate the traffic sign in a busy environment. With virtual reality, we can blow up the “walk sign”, so the student knows what it looks like. Then we gradually begin shrinking the sign and adding other environmental elements. Once the student has mastered this virtually, he or she transfers the knowledge to the real world. In the end, this is the most important function of virtual reality programs for special students.
1. In line 2, Para. 1, the word “province” means ______.
A. technology
B. domain
C. basis
D. region

2. Virtual reality can help future teachers learn ______.
A. how to assess students’ skill levels
B. how to respond to individual student’s needs
C. how to deal with students who misbehave
D. how to run an orderly classroom

3. This text mainly deals with ______.
A. The importance of using virtual reality in special education
B. The applications of virtual reality for special students
C. The advantages of virtual reality over conventional special education methods
D. The potential role of virtual reality in special education

4. Which group does the author NOT suggest might benefit from virtual reality applications to education?
A. students with mental illness.
B. students with behavioral disorders
C. students with physical handicaps.
D. students with developmental problems.

5. According to the text, what is the ultimate purpose of virtual reality in education?
A. To give special students a chance to experience life in the outside world.
B. To train teachers to work with students with special needs.
C. To allow special students to learn life-skills in a safe environment.
D. To prepare special students to transition into mainstream society.

Passage 2
The stock market is up--albeit still down from a year ago--and there is growing hope the long nightmare is finally over. Convictions are rising that this rally is for real. Most believe that an imminent economic rebound is about to validate the increasingly optimistic earnings expectations now imbedded in share prices. So far, any such recovery is just a forecast but policy makers and politicians are doing their very best to convince financial markets that they have both the wisdom and the tools to pull it off. Long frustrated investors want to believe these tantalizing promises. It’s the ultimate act of macro seduction.
On the surface, the policy bet isn’t hard to understand. Even the fiscal authorities have jumped in. America has led the way --upping the ante on budgetary stimulus for the second time in three years. However, very little of the stimulus is going towards the poor and part of the problem is that many policy--makers do not realize the full extent of the poverty problem in this nation. When the current measure used to calculate poverty levels was introduced in 1963, the poverty line for a family of two adults and two children was about $3,100. In 1992, there were 36.9 million people, or 14.5 percent of the U.S. population, with incomes below the poverty line. A proposed new way of measuring poverty levels would include for the first time the effects of work-related expenses such as transportation costs and child care costs on families’ available income. The largest effect of the new measure would be a decrease in the percentage of people in families receiving cash welfare who fall under the poverty line, and an increase in the percentage of people in working families who fall under it. People in families receiving cash welfare would make up 30 percent of the poor under the new measure, compared with 40 percent under the current measure. In contrast, people in working families would make up 59 percent of the poor under the new measure, compared with 51 percent under the current measure. Clearly before we can stimulate our economy we must face the reality of our working poor, not just assume they are being taken care of by our welfare system.
6. The reason why the stock market is up again, according to the author, is that ______.
A. share earnings are higher than in the past
B. share prices reflect higher earnings of stocks
C. the economy has rebounded greatly and caused the markets to follow
D. investors are being seduced into thinking the recovery is real

7. It can be learned from the text that ______.
A. economic stimulus isn’t working
B. economic stimulus ignores the poor completely
C. stimulus concentrates too much on those who are not really poor
D. the number of working poor has been under-counted

8. During the previous measure of poverty, ______.
A. the number of poor were under counted
B. work related expenses were underestimated
C. the percentage of the poor who were receiving welfare was over-counted
D. the number of working poor receiving welfare decreased

9. According to the 1963 standards, the current number of poor working families is ______.
A. 30 percent proportion of the population
B. 40 percent proportion of the population
C. 51 percent proportion of the population
D. 60 percent proportion of the population

10. One difference between the current and proposed measures is the fact that ______.
A. the proposed measure identifies fewer working poor
B. the current measure identifies fewer working poor
C. the proposed measure disregards expenses for basic needs
D. the current measure includes more people with health insurance

Passage 3
Dunnam bought a Chevrolet Blazer with one of the most popular new features in high-end cars: the On Star personal security system.
The heavily advertised communications and tracking feature is used nationwide by more than two million drivers, who simply push a button to connect, via a built-in cell-phone, to a member of the On Star staff. A Global Positioning System, or GPS, helps the employee give verbal directions to the driver or locate the car after an accident. The company can even send a signal to unlock car doors for locked-out owners, or honk the horn to help people find their cars in an endless plain of parking spaces. The biggest selling point for the system is its use in frustrating car thieves. Once an owner reports to the police that a car has been stolen, the company can track it to help arrest the thieves, a service it performs about 400 times each month.
But for Mr. Dunnam, the more he learned about his car’s security features, the less secure he felt. He has enough technical knowledge to worry that someone else--law enforcement officers, or hackers --could listen in on his phone calls, or gain control over his automotive systems without his knowledge or consent. “While I don’t believe GM intentionally designed this system to facilitate such activities, they sure have made it easy,” he said.
Mr. Dunnam said he had become even more concerned because of a federal appeals court case involving a criminal investigation, in which federal authorities had demanded that a company attach a wiretap to tracking services like those installed in his car. The suit did not reveal which company was involved. A three-judge panel in San Francisco rejected the request, but not on privacy grounds; the panel said the wiretap would interfere with the operation of the safety services. On Star has said that its equipment was not involved in that case. An On Star spokeswoman, Geri Lama, suggested that Mr. Dunnam’s worries were overblown. The signals that the company sends to unlock car doors or track location--based information can be triggered only with a secure exchange of specific identifying data, which ought to hinder all but the most determined hackers, she said.
11. The most important feature of On Star advertised by the company is that it can ______.
A. help people find their cars in the big parking lot
B. give verbal direction to drivers lost in unfamiliar areas
C. open car doors for owners unable to find their car keys
D. make it difficult for thieves to get away with stolen cars

12. We can conclude from the passage that On Star is ______.
A. too complicated to use especially for new drivers
B. not so useful and effective as the company claims
C. popularly used among the more expensive cars
D. not widely used in the country except in a few states

13. Mr. Dunnam felt dissatisfied with On Star because ______.
A. his personal information might be revealed
B. his demand for better services was rejected
C. On Star posed potential danger to driving safety
D. On Star has been developed mainly to facilitate police work

14. The three-judge panel rejected the request of the federal authorities because ______.
A. it was in violation of individual privacy
B. it was against the Constitution of the nation
C. the wiretap might affect the safety of personal data
D. the wiretap might reduce the efficiency of the system

15. On Star spokeswoman suggested that Mr. Dunnam’s worries ______.
A. exaggerated the problems that might occur
B. represented reasonable concerns of customers
C. presented problems for them to solve
D. make sense due to the existence of hackers

Passage 4
Banking is about money; and no other familiar commodity arouses such excesses of passion and dislike. Nor is there any other about which more nonsense is talked. The type of thing that comes to mind is not what is normally called economics, which is inexact rather than nonsensical, and only in the same way as all sciences are at the point where they try to predict people’s behavior and its consequences. Indeed most social sciences and, for example, medicine could probably be described in the same way.
However, it is common to hear assertions of the kind “if you were left alone on a desert island a few seed potatoes would be more useful to you than a million pounds” as though this proved something important about money except the undeniable fact that it would not be much use to anyone in a situation where very few of us are at all likely to find ourselves. Money in fact is a token or symbolic object, exchangeable on demand by its holders for goods and services. Its use for these purposes is universal except within a small number of primitive agricultural communities.
Money and the price mechanism, i.e., the changes in prices expressed in money terms of different goods and services are the means by which all modern societies regulate demand and supply for these things. Especially important are the relative changes in price of different goods and services compared with each other. To take random examples: the price of house-building has over the past five years risen a good deal faster than that of domestic appliances like refrigerators but slower than that of motor insurance or French Impressionist paintings. This fact has complex implications for students of the industry, trade unionism, town planning, insurance companies, fine-art auctions and politics. Unpacking these implications is what economics is about, but their implications for bankers are quite different.
In general, in modern industrialized societies, prices of services or goods produced in a context requiring a high service-content (e.g. a meal in a restaurant) are likely to rise in price more rapidly than goods capable of mass production on a large scale. It is also a characteristic of highly developed economies that the number of workers employed in service industries tends to rise and that of workers employed in manufacturing to fall. The discomfort this truth causes has been an important source of tension in western political life for many years and is likely to remain so for many more.
16. According to the passage, economics is ______.
A. similar to other social sciences because a lot of nonsense is talked about it
B. different from social sciences which try to forecast the way people behave
C. similar to other social sciences because it can foretell the tomorrow
D. different from sciences such as medicine

17. In the writer’s view, the assertion that money would be useless on a desert island ______.
A. illustrates one limitation to the importance of money.
B. is only of importance to people stayed in such places.
C. proves that there are many situations in which money is irrelevant.
D. tells us nothing of significance about money in a certain situation.

18. Modern societies control supply and demand ______.
A. by direct intervention in the pricing of goods and services
B. by means of money and the price mechanism
C. by keeping a watchful eye on relative price changes
D. by fixing prices in specific industries

19. The writer suggests that economics is concerned with ______.
A. explaining to bankers the price changes
B. understanding the effect of relative price changes
C. trying to understand why some prices rise fast
D. the same financial considerations as banking

20. In developed economies, service industries ______.
A. tend to employ an increasing number of people.
B. employ more people than manufacturing industries do
C. cause problems for the white-collar unions
D. try to reduce their employees to combat rising costs.

Passage 5
In the case of mobile phones, change is everything. Recent research indicates that the mobile phone is changing not only our culture, but our very bodies as well.
First, let’s talk about culture. The difference between the mobile phone and its parent, the fixed-line phone, is that a mobile number corresponds to a person, while a landline goes to a place. If you call my mobile, you get me. If you call my fixed-line phone, you get whoever answers it.
This has several implications. The most common one, however, and perhaps the thing that has changed our culture forever, is the “meeting” influence. People no longer need to make firm plans about when and where to meet. Twenty years ago, a Friday night would need to be arranged in advance. You needed enough time to allow everyone to get from their place of work to the first meeting place. Now, however, a night out can be arranged on the run. It is no longer “see you there at 8”, but “text me around 8 and we’ll see where we all are.”
Texting changes people as well. In their paper, “Insights into social and Psychological Effects of SMS Text Messaging”, two British researchers distinguished between two types of mobile phone users: the “talkers” and the “texters” ---those who prefer voice to text messages and those who prefer text to voice.
They found that the mobile phone’s individuality and privacy gave texters the ability to express a whole new outer personality. Texters were likely to report that their family would be surprised if they were to read their texts. This suggests that texting allowed texters to present a self-image that differed from the one familiar to those who knew them well.
Another scientist wrote of the changes that mobiles have brought to body language. There are two kinds that people use while speaking on the phone. There is the “speakeasy”: the head is held high, in a self-confident way, chatting away. And there is the “spacemaker”: these people focus on themselves and keep out other people.
Who can blame them? Phone meeting get cancelled or reformed and camera-phones intrude on people’s privacy. So, it is understandable if your mobile makes you nervous. But perhaps you needn’t worry so much. After all, it is good to talk.
21. When people plan to meet nowadays, they ______.
A. arrange the meeting place beforehand
B. postpone fixing the place till the last minute
C. seldom care about when and where to meet.
D. still love to work out detailed meeting plans.

22. According to the two British researchers, the social and psychological effects are mostly likely to be seen on ______.

Passage 6
Humanity uses a little less than half the water available worldwide. Yet occurrences of shortages and droughts are causing famine and distress in some areas, and industrial and agricultural byproducts are polluting water supplies. Since the world’s population is expected to double in the next 50 years, many experts think we are on the edge of a widespread water crisis.
But that doesn’t have to be the outcome. Water shortages do not have to trouble the world--if we start valuing water more than we have in the past. Just as we began to appreciate petroleum more after the 1970s oil crises, today we must start looking at water from a fresh economic perspective. We can no longer afford to consider water a virtually free resource of which we can use as much as we like in any way we want.
Instead, for all uses except the domestic demand of the poor, governments should price water to reflect its actual value. This means charging a fee for the water itself as well as for the supply costs.
Governments should also protect this resource by providing water in more economically and environmentally sound ways. For example, often the cheapest way to provide irrigation water in the dry tropics is through small-scale projects, such as gathering rainfall in depressions and pumping it to nearby cropland.
No matter what steps governments take to provide water more efficiently, they must change their institutional and legal approaches to water use. Rather than spread control among hundreds or even thousands of local, regional, and national agencies that watch various aspects of water use, countries should set up central authorities to coordinate water policy.
26. What is the real cause of the potential water crisis?

A. build big lakes to store water
B. construct big pumping stations
C. build small and cheap irrigation systems

IV. Translation (30%)
Part A (20%)
Translate the following passage into Chinese
In contrast, it is very hard for people to care about strangers or about products to be used by strangers. In our era of industrial mass production and mass marketing, quality is a constant problem because the intimate sentimental and personal bonds which once made us responsible to each other and to our products have withered away and been replaced by money relationships. Not only are the producers and consumers strangers but the women and men involved in various stages of production and distribution--management, the workers on the factory floor, the office help, the salespeople--are also strangers to each other. In larger companies there may be hundreds of thousands of people all working on the same product who can never meet face-to-face or learn one another’s names. The larger the company and the more complex its division of labor, the greater the sum of uncaring relationships and hence the greater the effect of Murphy’s Law.

The type of thing that comes to mind is not what is normally called economics, which is inexact rather than nonsensical, and only in the same way as all sciences are at the point where they try to predict people’s behavior and its consequences.(我所想到的这类事物不是通常所称的经济学,经济学虽不精确,但并非荒谬,而且它与所有科学的唯一共同点是它们都试图预测人们的行为模式及其后果)"知C项"和其它社会科学一样,因为它能预测明天"正确。也由此知A项中"a lot of nonsense"与B项中"different from social sciences"与原文不符,由第一段中"Indeed most social sciences and, for example, medicine could probably be described in the same way.(确实,大多数社会科学也这样——预测人们的行为模式及其后果。例如医学可能被这同样的方式来描述)"知"医学与经济学一样都试图预测人们的行为模式及其后果"方面也是一样的,由此知D项与原文内容不符。
17. D  【解析】推理判断题。由第二段中"as though this proved something important about money except the undeniable fact that it would not be much use to anyone in a situation where very few of us are at all likely to find ourselves.(这似乎证明了金钱的一个要义,但却无法说明一个不容否认的事实,即我们极少有人会陷身于这种金钱无用的境地)"知D项"告诉我们在某些情况下金钱不重要"正确。
Money and the price mechanism, i.e., the changes in prices expressed in money terms of different goods and services are the means by which all modern societies regulate demand and supply for these things.(金钱和价格机制,即用金钱形式的价格变化来表现不同商品和服务,是所有现代社会用以调节这些东西供需的方式)"知B项"运用金钱和价格机制"正确。
Especially important are the relative changes in price of different goods and services compared with each other.(彼此比较,不同商品和服务的价格的相应变化尤其重要)"及"Unpacking these implications is what economics is about, but their implications for bankers are quite different.(揭开这些含意就是经济学要做的,但这些含意对银行家来说又相当不一样)"可推知B项"弄懂相对价格变化的影响"正确;也由此知A项"向银行家解释价格变化"及D项"如银行家样有同样的金融考虑"不正确;C项"试图弄懂为什么价格会增长那么快"只是B项涉及内容的一个方面。
It is also a characteristic of highly developed economies that the number of workers employed in service industries tends to rise and that of workers employed in manufacturing to fall.(这也是高度发达经济〈国家〉的一个特点,即服务行业的就业人数倾向于增长,而制造业的工人数量在减少)"可推知A项"倾向于雇佣越来越多的员工"正确,也由此知D项"试图裁员以应对成本上涨"不正确;B项"比制造行业雇佣更多人员"是对文中提及的"服务行业的就业人数倾向于增长,而制造业的工人数量在减少"的误解。

【结构分析】主句:it(主语)is common to hear(谓语)宾语(assertions of the kind);"if you were left alone on a desert island a few seed potatoes would be more useful to you than a million pounds"是assertions of the kind的同位语;if引导条件状语从句;as though引导让步状语从句,从句中:this(主语)proved(谓语)something important(宾语);that it would not be much use to anyone in a situation为同位语从句来修饰前面的facts;where very few of us are at all likely to find ourselves作定语从句来修饰前面的situation。

【结构分析】句子主干:prices of services or goods(主语)are likely to rise(谓语);produced in a context requiring a high service-content (e.g. a meal in a restaurant)为"services or goods"的后置定语;requiring a high service-content (e.g. a meal in a restaurant)为a context的后置定语;capable of mass production on a large scale为第一个"goods"的后置定语。

2. The most common one, however, and perhaps the thing that has changed our culture forever, is the “meeting” influence.
【结构分析】主干:The most common one(主语)is(谓语)the "meeting" influence(表语)。perhaps the thing that has changed our culture forever为The most common one的同位语,其中that引导定语从句来修饰前面的thing。

Water shortages do not have to trouble the world if we start valuing water more than we have in the past.(如果我们开始比过去更加珍惜水的话,水资源短缺就不会困扰世界)"知D项"人类并没有很珍惜水资源"正确,也由此知B项"世界人口增长越来越快"不正确;A项"世界上只有一半的水可以使用"与客观事实"地球表面的70%被水覆盖,但淡水资源仅占所有水资源的2.5%"不符;C项"世界上有一半的水资源已被严重污染"在文中未提到。
Yet occurrences of shortages and droughts are causing famine and distress in some areas, and industrial and agricultural by-products are polluting water supplies.(缺水与干旱导致某些地区出现饥荒和灾难,同时工农业副产品也正在污染水源。)"

complete"(强调事物在内容、程度、或数量方面的完整)完整的;完全的";ful"(侧重指内容,含有能包括所有的充足内容的意味)完全的;完整的";total"(强调每一构成部分或成分均被计算在内)全部的;完全的;绝对的";whole"(强调大小或重要性)整个的,全部的"。由空格前提及"听说很多有关种族的事情"及空格处所在句子意思"the phenomenon of race consists of a few surface indications.(这种种族的……
since"因为;由于";as"因为,随着";while"虽然,当……时候"。
speak"说话;演讲";talk"谈话;交谈";tell"辨别;告诉;告知";mention"提到;提及"。
No scientists could examine a brain and tell you the race to which the individual belong.(没有科学家能从检查大脑上去告诉你个人属于的种族)"及其它详细说明可以看出在physical structure(物理结构)、the brain(大脑)或the internal organs(内脏)方面是没有任何东西可以去指出不同的。 A"某些东西";B"所有东西";D"任何东西"。
display"显示;表现";demonstrate"证明;展示";appear"出现;显得"。
There are four types of blood(这里有四种血型)"与空格后的"no type is distinct(没有一种是独特的)"知这里指代"所有的血型",由此知A项"所有的"正确。most"大多数";no"没有";some"一些"。
空格前的定冠词the为依据,same前常加the。identical"同一的";similar"相似的";alike"相似的,相同的"。
No scientists could examine a brain and tell you the race to which the individual belong.(没有科学家能从检查大脑上去告诉你个人属于的种族)"及空格所在句but引导的转折部分句意"但是这个发生在每一个种族"可推测"大脑尺寸变化"更符合逻辑;故D项"变化"正确。remain"保持一致,不变";increase"增加,增长";decrease"减少,减小"。
ever"(一般用于否定句、祈使句、疑问句和条件从句,表示强调)曾经";then"然后;那时";never"从不;决不";once"曾经,一次"。
health"健康";body"身体";thought"思想"。
big"大的";minor"较小的";major"主要的"。
true"真实的";exact"精确的;准确的";certain"无疑的,必然的"。
make"使得(主动语态句中其后接动词时不用to);制造";cause"引起,使遭受(主动语态句中其后接动词时候需用to)";move"移动";turn"转动"。
but"但是";though"尽管";so"所以;因此"。
由空格前面的"change the response of a group of people(改变人的反应)"可推知这里指"独特的方式",由此知B项"独特的;奇怪的"正确。ordinary"普通的";usual"通常的";common"一般的;通常的;共同的"。
what"什么";whichever"任何一个";whatever"无论什么"。
in the past"过去,从前"。
IV. Translation
In our era of industrial mass production and mass marketing"时,需要将后置era的后置定语"of industrial mass production and mass marketing"提前翻译成"在我们这个工业大规模生产和大众营销的时代"。
在翻译"the intimate sentimental and personal bonds which once made us responsible to each other and to our products have withered away and been replaced by money relationships"是个复合句,在翻译时,我们可以先找出句子的主干"the intimate sentimental and personal bonds have withered away and been replaced by money relationships"翻译成"亲密感情和人际关系已经消失且被金钱关系取而代之",接着将the intimate sentimental and personal bonds的后置定语"which once made us responsible to each other and to our products"翻译成"一度使我们要对对方或自己的产品负责的"后置前。
The larger the company and the more complex its division of labor, the greater the sum of uncaring relationships and hence the greater the effect of Murphy’s Law."
Part B
The Phoenix brand bicycles which are manufactured by Shanghai No. 3 Bicycle Factory have won fame both at home and abroad.
【难点分析】"驰名中外"可以翻译"have won fame both at home and abroad / have been known at home and abroad / have been renowned both inside and outside the country / have good reputation both at home and abroad";在翻译"上海自行车三厂生产的"时,我们可以用which引导一个分句作"凤凰牌自行车"的后置定语来翻译,从而让句子更符合英文习惯。
No other nation has such a strong attachment for the native land as we Chinese.
【难点分析】在翻译"依恋故土"时,我们也可以通过意译来翻译成be reluctant to leave / be unwilling to leave / feel regret at parting from the native land;另外除用as的同级比较外,我们也可以使用比较级来翻译"We are more reluctant to leave the native land than any other nation."
While you are in the prime of life, why not devote yourselves to a special field of study?
【难点分析】"趁现在年富力强的时候"我们可以翻译成"while you are in the prime of life"或"while you are young and strong";"努力做一种专门学问"也可以翻译"why not focus your effort on learning a special knowledge"。
This fund may not be drawn on without permission.
This fund may be employed with permission."或"Permission is needed for this fund to be used"。
Chengdu is a city that you will never want to leave once you come to it.
【难点分析】在翻译这句时,我们可以先找出句子的主干"成都是一座城市"翻译成"Chengdu is a city",而将"来了就不想走的"当作"一座城市"的后置定语来翻译"that you will never want to leave once you come to it",从而让译文简洁且符合英文的表达方式。

I agree with this opinion(我赞同这个主张)";第二段论述如今使用的三种垃圾处理方式"Dump it, burn it and convert it into something useful.(直接倒掉,烧掉和转化成有用的东西)"的不足;第三段紧接第二段指出"直接倒掉或烧掉垃圾应该被禁止,而将垃圾转化成有用的东西需要更进一步改进和管理,并提出了有利于处理垃圾的一些建议";第四段即最后一段总结全文后提出自己的观点"尽管保护环境有很多事情要做,但我相信在大家的努力下终究会成功"。

Saving Planet Earth Requires Everyone’s Effort
There is a growing tendency nowadays for people to produce much more garbage than ever before. Some people hold an opinion that this leads to a throw-away society for too many plastic bags and rubbish that we produce but cannot fully dispose of or threaten to overwhelm us. Personally, I agree with this opinion.
When we come to think about it, there are only three ways we can deal with rubbish. Dump it, burn it and convert it into something useful. In the first instance, we throw various kinds of useless things without sorting to a garbage bin and then let the garbage-collecting truck carry them away to designated place to dump directly, problems seemingly are solved for us, but the unprocessed garbage will have the designated places polluted first, then the poisonous materials released by it will soon pollute our air by wind or water resources by penetrating into soil. In the second method, there is no doubt that kinds of harmful gas will be produced and then pollute our atmosphere as well as our health. The last way sounds a good idea; however, converting garbage into something useful needs complicated and advanced recycle technology which will cost a huge sum of money, so for the sake of reducing cost and gaining profits, many plants responsible for converting and recycling garbage in fact are not so environment-oriented as declared.
Through discussions above, we can clearly find that the first two ways should be banned undoubtedly and further improvements and managements for the third way are needed, so I recommend some measures should be taken to make the third way more efficiently and effectively. These measures include: our government make more investment in researches related to garbage-converting technologies and helping garbage-converting companies update their equipments, create a more favorable environment for garbage-converting companies to develop through reducing taxes, providing incentives as well as setting up related specific laws. Moreover, we should raise the public’s awareness of protecting our environment, and let them consciously use less plastic bags and develop a habit of disposing garbage after sorting out them, and so on.
All in all, although there are now so many things to do for protecting our environment, I believe we can save our planet earth with everyone’s efforts in the long run.
