(Passage One)

In some countries where racial prejudice is acute, violence has so come to be taken for granted as a means of solving differences, that it is not even questioned. There are countries where the white man imposes his rule by brute force; there are countries where the black man protests by setting fire to cities and by looting and pillaging. Important people on both sides, who would in other respects appear to be reasonable men, get up and calmly argue in favor of violence–as if it were a legitimate solution, like any other. What is really frightening, what really fills you with despair, is the realization that when it comes to the crunch, we have made no actual progress at all. We may wear collars and ties instead of war-paint, but our instincts remain basically unchanged. The whole of the recorded history of the human race, that tedious documentation of violence, has taught us absolutely nothing. We have still not learnt that violence never solves a problem but makes it more acute. The sheer horror, the bloodshed, the suffering mean nothing. No solution ever comes to light the morning after when we dismally contemplate the smoking ruins and wonder what hit us. The truly reasonable men who know where the solutions lie are finding it harder and harder to get a hearing. They are despised, mistrusted and even persecuted by their own kind because they advocate such apparently outrageous things as law enforcement. If half the energy that goes into violent acts were put to good use, if our efforts were directed at cleaning up the slums and ghettos, at improving living-standards and providing education and employment for all, we would have gone a long way to arriving at a solution. Our strength is sapped by having to mop up the mess that violence leaves in its wake. In a well-directed effort, it would not be impossible to fulfill the ideals of a stable social programme. The benefits that can be derived from constructive solutions are everywhere apparent in the world around us. Genuine and lasting solutions are always possible, providing we work within the framework of the law. Before we can even begin to contemplate peaceful co-existence between the races, we must appreciate each other's problems. And to do this, we must learn about them: it is a simple exercise in communication, in exchanging information. 'Talk, talk, talk,' the advocates of violence say, all you ever do is talk, and we are none the wiser. 'It's rather like the story of the famous barrister who painstakingly explained his case to the judge. After listening to a lengthy argument the judge complained that after all this talk, he was none the wiser. 'Possible, my lord,' the barrister replied, 'none the wiser, but surely far better informed.' Knowledge is the necessary prerequisite to wisdom: the knowledge that violence creates the evils it pretends to solve.

B(Violence Can Do Nothing to Diminish Racial Prejudice.)
  • A “暴力倡导者制造邪恶” 仅为原文细节(末段 “暴力制造它声称要解决的邪恶”),非全文核心;
  • C “重要人物视暴力为合法解决方案” 是首段提及的现象描述,并非作者要传递的核心观点;
B(nothing.)
    定位原文首段关键句:“The whole of the recorded history of the human race, that tedious documentation of violence, has taught us absolutely nothing”(人类所有有记录的历史,那些冗长的暴力记载,根本没有教会我们任何东西),“absolutely nothing” 与选项 B “nothing” 完全一致,语义无偏差。
  • A “暴力带来进步” 与原文 “violence never solves a problem but makes it more acute”(暴力从未解决问题,反而加剧问题)矛盾;
  • C “流血不可避免” 原文未提及,属于无中生有;
D(have difficulty in advocating law enforcement.)
    定位原文第二段:“The truly reasonable men... are despised, mistrusted and even persecuted... because they advocate such apparently outrageous things as law enforcement”(真正理性的人因倡导法治而被轻视、怀疑甚至迫害),可推断 “理性者在倡导法治时面临困难”,选项 D 正确。
  • A “被迫害”、B “无法获得话语权”、C “被轻视” 均为原文直接表述的现象,题干要求 “inferred(推断)”,此类 “原文直接信息” 不符合推理题要求;
C(He gains nothing after listening.)
    结合上下文:律师向法官详细解释案件后,法官抱怨 “he was none the wiser”,律师回应 “none the wiser, but surely far better informed”(虽未更明智,但确实更了解情况),可见 “none the wiser” 强调 “未获得有价值的认知或解决方案”,与选项 C “听后毫无收获” 语义一致。
  • A “倾听时不明智” 侧重 “倾听态度”,原文强调 “信息获取效果”,语义偏差;
  • B “无法理解论点” 与律师 “详细解释案件” 及法官 “更了解情况” 矛盾,法官并非 “不理解”,而是 “未获得关键启发”;
B(communication.)
    作者在第三段明确提出:“Before we can even begin to contemplate peaceful co-existence... we must learn about them: it is a simple exercise in communication, in exchanging information”(要实现种族和平共处,必须了解彼此的问题,而这需要沟通与信息交换),且通过 “律师与法官” 的案例强调 “沟通带来认知提升”,可见 “沟通” 是解决种族偏见的最佳途径,选项 B 正确。
  • A “法治” 是第二段提及的 “理性者倡导的解决方案”,但作者强调 “沟通是法治与和平共处的前提”,法治是 “后续手段”,非 “最佳途径”;
  • C “知识” 是 “智慧的前提”,而知识的获取依赖沟通,知识是 “结果” 而非 “手段”;

(21) But previous attempts to transplant unaltered pig tissue into humans have failed, due to immune rejection of the tissue. (23) However, scientists warn that much more work is necessary before organs from copies of the pigs could be transplanted into humans.
  • “unaltered pig tissue” 译为 “未经基因改造的猪组织”,结合前文 “genetically modified piglets”(转基因克隆猪),补充 “基因改造” 使语义完整,避免直译 “未改变的猪组织” 的模糊性;
  • “immune rejection” 译为 “免疫排斥反应”,为医学领域固定术语,确保专业性;
  • “organs from copies of the pigs” 译为 “克隆猪的器官”,“copies” 结合上下文 “cloned piglets” 译为 “克隆”,比 “复制品” 更精准;
  • “much more work is necessary” 译为 “仍需开展大量额外研究工作”,补充 “研究” 使 “work” 的语义具体化,避免 “大量工作” 的空洞表述;
  • “before” 译为 “要……
